The Beatles’ third tour of north America was nearly a year in the planning. By late 1964 manager Brian Epstein knew that they were not only the biggest act in his stable they had become the biggest act on earth. America worshipped them.
Somewhere different for the start of this tour, in New York – somewhere appropriately massive – had to be found. It was a baseball stadium in Flushing, Queens. On 15 August 1965 The Beatles played the concert of their lives there. This is that story.
Here also are the huge strides in writing, musicianship and recording the group made in the 12 months or so up to Shea Stadium. Some of this was played at the gig but little above the screams was heard.
The Beatles at Shea 50 years ago remains, nonetheless, a watershed 1960s moment the climax in the live career of the greatest quartet the world has known.

The Author

James Woodall has published books about flamenco, writer Jorge Luis Borges and Brazilian pop. His 1997 biography of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, in German, was translated into over a dozen languages. His first Single (2014) was about The Beatles’ last year together.

As a Beatles fan, I was honestly looking forward to reading this book. However, as a made my way through it, I became increasingly agitated. It seemed like an odd analysis of the various Beatles albums rather than a discussion about the supposed subject, Beatles playing at Shea Stadium. We only reach that towards the very end of this book. In fact, I don't recall seeing the set list of the concert, which would have been reasonable considering the space invested on discussing album songs earlier in the book.
I'm thoroughly disappointed.

The Beatles Play Shea Single edition by James Woodall Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

For a quick read it was ok. Well written and thoughtful. A new perspective (arguably) but this came across more as a labor of love and perhaps more applicable for a music student or someone who plays Beatle covers. The effort is much appreciated but "meh"
I enjoyed reading this. It has a lot of information about the group, their songs and concerts.
Interesting details about the Shea stadium gig.
I found the writer's style hard to read - if not downright annoying. No new info here for The Beatles fan; barely a footnote worth of a story.
This kindle single aims to look at the story behind the Beatles concert at Shea Stadium and the songs they sung there on the 15th August, 1965. I have to admit that I was surprised to see this title appear – not least because of Dave Schwensen’s exhaustive, full length, title, “The Beatles at Shea Stadium,” which covered this concert in depth. However, I enjoyed James Woodall’s previous kindle single, “The Story of the Beatles Last Song,” and so decided to give this a try.

This title begins with the US love affair with the Beatlemania and examines the importance of promoter Sid Bernstein; who came across the Beatles in British newspapers while studying at night school and contacted Brian Epstein about the possibility of booking them as early as February 1963. By 1965, Bernstein had the novel idea of presenting the band at the new sports arena in Queens – home of the New York Mets baseball team.

Having set the scene, this short title meanders backwards to look at the songs the band sung at that concert, to their meeting with Bob Dylan, through the Beatles earlier albums and their changing styles and influence, John and George’s first experience of acid and ends on stage at Shea Stadium.

I have to say that this is a slightly disjointed read and I am not sure of the audience it is pitched at. Much of the work is personal to the author – his thoughts on certain songs and events. For casual readers, it does not really explain why the Beatles chose certain songs for that concert and what went into picking that particular playlist. However, if you do not wish to read the Schwensen book (which I found a far more satisfying read) this is an interesting look at an important concert in the bands history. Coincidentally, two future Beatle wives were at the concert – both Barbara Bach and Linda Eastman were in the audience that day. Although I did enjoy this kindle single as much as I did Woodall’s previous title, I like his writing style and hope he writes more kindle singles in the future.
Interesting story about the Beatles playing at Shea.
Eh... kind of all over the pace.
It's an incredible convenience to sample books on 's website and either purchase or view free via the app on my iPad Pro. This (and another book via Prime) have been my first experiences with tablet reading, but it turns out that the convenience and ability to read in very low ambient light conditions make this a terrific way to read.
